Synopsis
The abolition of slavery across the British Empire is imminent when Robert Rutherford, a young Englishman, arrives to take up the position of bookkeeper on the Rose Hall plantation, Jamaica. The plantation owner is the young but already thrice widowed Annie Palmer.
Annie is rumoured to be skilled in witchcraft and voodoo, and to wield unnatural power over the people she enslaves and those who go against her. Trouble flares when a free black girl Millicent decides to become Robert’s servant to stay close to him, a fact Robert tries to hide while he courts Annie. As tensions rise over a looming slave revolt in protest at their delayed emancipation, Annie is publicly accused of being a murderer by Millicent.
