Lily of Bermuda, The

By Ernest A Trimingham

Year staged: 1909

Staged in: Theatre Royal Manchester

Cast Size: 30

Synopsis

Set in the fictional Belletere Hotel, this play with songs comedically depicts the lives of white British and American upper crust expats living in Bermuda. The plot largely follows the story of Lieutenant Sir Geoffrey Hilton Bart (Hilton), who, being furloughed, begins to sing for money while wearing a mask. This makes Hilton infamous among those who live and work in the hotel, bringing both love and ire. Meanwhile, Lily Ginter (the titular Lily of Bermuda), daughter of Allen Ginter (an American millionaire, known as ‘The Ice King’) is looking for the man she loves, the man who sings in the mask. Charting a large cast of characters (including a hunger striker, hotel workers, well-to-do women, a Duchess, naval officers, a fortune teller, and a Suffragette), the play charts two people’s quests for love as they battle the class prejudice and insurmountable hijinks.
