Synopsis

Coming Up For Air is a one act play centered on Denzil, A black Caribbean man who has been convicted of murdering three people and is facing the death penalty. Interviewed by psychiatrist Jules, the play opens into a deep exploration of Denzil’s experiences of racism, oppression, childhood trauma and feeling like an outsider in Britain. With Jules trying to understand his mental state, Denzil’s dark humour and strong political beliefs contrast with moments where his psychological struggles become apparent that gradually blurs the line between mental illness, personal responsibility and the social pressures that shaped Denzil’s actions.
