Lenny Henry

Biography

Sir Lenny Henry’s work in theatre includes the title role in Othello for Northern Broadsides in the West End and on tour, for which he won Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. He has toured worldwide with his comedy shows Cradle to Rave, Where You From?, So Much Things to Say, Have You Seen This Man?, Larger Than Life and Loud! He was the first British comic to make a live stand-up comedy film: Lenny Henry Live and Unleashed was filmed before a live audience at the Hackney Empire. TV includes The Magicians, Harry and Paul, First Love, Happy Birthday OU, Big and Small, Lenny’s Britain, Lenny’s Perfect Night In, The Lenny Henry Show, Little Robots, Lenny Henry In Pieces, Goodbye Mr Steadman, Hope and Glory, The Man, Lenny Goes to Town, Lenny’s Big Amazon Adventure, Lenny Henry Gets Wild, White Goods, Chef, South Bank Show, Alive and Kicking, Bernard and the Genie, Lenny Go Home, The Comic Strip Presents, The Delbert Wilkins Show, Three of a Kind, Tiswas and New Faces. Films include True Identity. Radio includes Rudy’s Rare Records, Anansi Boys, Lenny & Will, Bad Faith, Matilda and What’s So Great About? He won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Comedy Awards and Black Entertainment Comedy Awards in 2003, the BMF Inspiration Award, Golden Rose of Montreux, BBC British Personality of the Year and The Golden Nymph Award at the Monte Carlo Television Festival. He is co-founder of Comic Relief. He was awarded a CBE in 1999. In 2023, his debut play August in England premiered at the Bush Theatre to critical acclaim.
