Diana Nneka Atuona

Biography

Diana Nneka Atuona is a Nigerian-British playwright from Peckham, London. She studied at South Bank University before winning a scholarship from Gray’s Inn to study law but her first love has always been to write for stage, screen and music. Her first play Liberian Girl won the Alfred Fagon award (2013) and opened at the Royal Court Theatre in 2015 to widespread acclaim. Atuona was also nominated for the Evening Standard Award as Most Promising Playwright and the Writer’s Guild award for Best New Play. In 2019, Diana Nneka Atuona received the 50th George Devine Award for most promising playwright for her play ‘Trouble in Butetown’. She was awarded the £15,000 prize at an event at the Royal Court Theatre. The play was paused because of the pandemic but opened to acclaim at The Donmar Warehouse in 2023 starring Rita Bernard-Shaw and Samuel Adewunmi and Sarah Parish.
