Caryl Phillips

Caryl Phillips was born in St. Kitts and came to Britain at the age of four months. He grew up in Leeds, and graduated from Oxford University in 1979 with a B.A. Honours in English Literature. The following year he wrote his first play, Strange Fruit, which premiered at the Crucible, Sheffield. In 1984 Phillips won the BBC Giles Cooper Award for Best Radio Play for his play, The Wasted Years; since then, he has received many other awards for his literature, including the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year, 1992. In addition to his writing career, Phillips has also taught in various academic institutions across the world.
