Smintheus, a black bourgeois intellectual, while working on a massive sociological study entitled "The Contributions of the Negro Intellectual to American Society and His Resultant Impotence," avoids dealing with the more concrete problems of his life-his failing marriage, his black identity, his values, etc-until his only friend, Robert, dies in jail and Smintheus finally confronts reality and goes mad. Uses whiteface.
