As well as being an arts and outreach producter, Tian is also a playwright and theatre director. He has wortked for Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning as a Creative Producer and then as Community Engagement Manager. Most recently, he was Engagement Producer for Le Gateau Chocolat's tour of Icons and Duckie in 2018, on The Sick of The Fringe Care and Destruction Festival 2019 and Creative Producer on Fertility Fest 2019.

He founded the theatre company New Slang Productions in 2011. In early 2012, his debut production Silver Shores was staged at the Tristan Bates Theatre and a few years after that in 2015 his Sophmore effort Changing State was staged at the Hen & Chickens Theatre. Tian wrote and directed both plays. The thread running through Tian's work is social concerns such as race and class and how it affects communities. Most recently, Tian has been awarded the STUN x Lowry Associate Artist placement to create his new piece Tomorrow is Not Promised in 2021 and secured Arts Council Project Grant support for its R&D process. This was staged with support of the Lowry and Arts Council in 2022 in the Aldridge studio of The Lowry.
