The first Commonwealth Arts Festival, organised by the impressario Ian Hunter, was held in Britian in 1965. It lasted for 17 days with events and displays in four centres - Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool and London. Maori singers performed at Trafalgar Square, the Duro National Theatre Oshogo from Western Nigeria appeared in all four centres, and there were dance troupes from Sri Lanka, Montreal, Jamaica, Sierra Leone and Australia.
