In 1985 the Black Theatre Forum (BTF) was founded to stimulate the development of black theatre in Britain and BTF functioned as an umbrella organisation of African Caribbean and Asian theatre companies. BTF produced and presented the annual seasons (Black Theatre Season) of black and Asian theatre in established London venues. In the early 1990s the restructuring of the Greater London Authority (GLA) to the London Arts Board saw a redistribution of the money previously allocated to delivery of the Black Theatre Season, and the 1990 Black Theatre Season was the final one of its kind. BTF's other activities continued, and they offered a range of training and workshops. In 2001 BTF had officially ended, and the cultural organisation Future Histories led by Dr Alda Terracciano devised a project to catalogue and make accessible the material contained in the Black Theatre Forum and NITRO archives.
